What is burnout? According to the Mayo Clinic, "Job burnout is a special type of work-related stress — a state of physical or emotional exhaustion that also involves a sense of reduced accomplishment and loss of personal identity."
How does employee burnout affect the workplace?
Stressed Employees
High Turnover
Lower Productivity
Increased Absences
Over the last few years, beating burnout has become an increased problem not only for employees, but for employers. When you begin to look at what you can do as an employer, the first step is to find out what unique stressors- both work and non-work related are contributing to your employees wellbeing or lack there of.
For example, has reliable childcare become an issue? Have daily meals become a challenge?
Create or access a survey to find out what your employees needs are. Gathering information will help you learn about your employees and what is important to your team before putting resources into efforts your team may not care about or need! You may be surprised what you learn.
Supporting your employees can go beyond traditional methods. How can you support family care, physical and mental wellbeing, food, rest or transportation? When your workforce feels supported, they are less likely to be absent and more likely to be productive at work. What services or resources are already in place that your employees may not know about? Who do you know that you can partner with to provide support?
For example, do you know another business that specializes in childcare services? What if you could partner with them by referring employees or offering discounted rates to employees who use their services? Not every need needs to be provided in house!
Goldman Sachs worked to rebrand their employee assistance services as "Resilience Services, with a focus on employee wellness. They found a very positive response and found more employees utilized the assistance!
